Our letter to Gov. Ferguson
March 17, 2026
To: The Honorable Governor Bob Ferguson
Regarding the sales and use tax exemption on hygiene essentials in SB 6346
Dear Governor Ferguson,
Thank you for your ongoing support for SB 6346, AKA the “Millionaires Tax” Bill. The hygiene, diaper,
and over-the-counter medicine tax exemptions included in this bill move us closer to a Washington
where people at all income levels are truly empowered to thrive with dignity.
Because of this bill the 28%1 of Washingtonians currently unable to afford hygiene essentials without
sacrificing other necessities like utilities, transportation costs, clothes, or food, will have desperately
needed economic relief.
Together we are making history, striving against all odds to turn the second most regressive tax code
in our nation into a beacon of possibility for what a community that prioritizes everyone’s dignity can
be. This policy establishes that it is and should be a priority of our governing bodies to ensure the
hygiene needs of those facing the greatest economic challenges are met with dignity and
consistency.
Your championship is critical to the movement we are building toward a Washington where every
family is empowered to live with dignity, and the tax burden is shared fairly.
Thank you for addressing the critical need for hygiene equity in our state by keeping the tax
exemptions on hygiene supplies, diapers, and OTC medicines in the final version of SB 6346. Your
partnership is essential to the healthier future we are building together.
In solidarity,
The Essentials First Policy Team
